His father Vece Paes won a bronze medal in the Munich Olympics of 1972 in hockey.

Leander Paes started his Davis Cup career in 1990 at a young age of 16, when he partnered Zeeshan Ali in the doubles to beat the Japanese team in a gruelling 5 set encounter.
He is considered as one of the top Davis cup players for his country with a record of 81–30 overall as of May 2007.
